The six-month rule is a starting point
Many patients book every six months because that rhythm suits preventive dental care and health-fund entitlements. It is not a law of nature. Some patients need shorter maintenance intervals, while some low-risk adults may be reviewed less often after a dentist has assessed them.
What changes the interval
- Bleeding gums, previous gum disease, or deep cleaning history.
- Dry mouth, medication changes, diabetes, pregnancy, or heavy grinding.
- Recent decay, large old fillings, cracked teeth, or orthodontic treatment.
- A long gap since your last dental visit.
The first appointment back is not about judgement. It is about getting an accurate baseline: teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues, X-rays if needed, and a plain-English plan before anything else happens.
